As I just recently saw a trailor for the new TV series coming in April, "Revelations." I am reminded once again of how big the dialogue on spiritual things is in mainstream culture. The themes of a spiritual plane and how it relates to the physical world seem to come up over and over again. And more often than not, it uses a Christian context as a base langauge.
Consider these fairly recent developments:
Constantine - A pretty direct picture of spiritual warfare and a not too far off view of redemption by grace.
The Exorcist Films
A ton of films with spiritual sub-texts like
The 6th Sense
The Green Mile
The Upcoming -
Chronicles of Narnia
Kingdom of Heaven
On TV -
Angels in America
Point Pleasant - Pretty much the O.C. meets the Omen.
Six Feet Under
Joan of Arcadio
Touched by an ANgel
The wierd thing is, I know I am forgetting a bunch of others that are significant. There are so many projects wirth this kind of theme it is almost overwhelming.
One quick observation: It is very tough to find a favorable representation of organized Christianity in any of this proliferation of spiritual conversation. What does that mean for us?
What do we do with this opportunity? How can we meaningfully engage in the dialogue?
